So Fey

" Mortals believe that the Fey always know what's coming. They have the Sixth Sense and the Foretelling, people say and it's impossible to take the Gentry, as they call them, by surprise."

-- from "The Wand's Boy" by Richard Bowes

"It wasn't, Ivy thought, so much that she didn't want to get married ever. It was merely the method that she disapproved of. Her mother, Queen Arhianrhod, told her she was being silly--the Queen claimed that her marriage, preceded as it was by a contest in which brave knights from all over the realm of Faerie vied to win her hand, had been the most exciting time of her life, and that when Ivy's father had won the Third Task and Arhianrhod's hand in marriage, she had wept with happiness."

-- from "Charming" by Ruby Brazer and Cassandra Claire

"Christopher was about to make his first foray into the Rambles. He’d slipped out of the apartment while Barrett and Hector conspired in the kitchen. Pilfering an apple from a street vender in Union Square he leisurely strolled up Broadway as the sun set a florid pink fan down across the horizon. Reaching the park as the sky finally darkened, he hopped the low cobblestone fence bordering Central Park West and stood still among the nearest trees, their shadows wrapping around his ankles, enticing him further toward mystery."

-- from "A Faun’s Tale in Central Park" by Tom Cardamone

"Maria wipes crumbs from the dollsize table and arranges two chunks of chocolate-cherry bread on a brown Wedgewood saucer. The shotglass of organic milk, skim, goes to the saucer's right, and a gold-plated dessert fork to the left. A sprig of rosemary in a bud vase adds a touch of elegance. Then she goes to bed."

-- from "Detox" by Elspeth Potter

SO FEY: QUEER FAERY FICTION

They're immortal. They cannot lie. Often they are unnaturally beautiful or horrendously ugly. With a song or a glance or a single kiss they can bewitch. They are the Fey Folk. For centuries they have captivated us, in folktales and in fiction.

I'm pleased to be editing a new collection of faery stories with a distinctive twist - all have g/l/b/t themes! While there have been anthologies of queer speculative fiction, none have ever focused attention on faeries. But consider how so many gay cultural elements can be applied to the Fey - the focus on youth and beauty, the love of the dance, and wild passion and decadence. Not to mention the drama of vengeance and spurned love.
